Tacoma Public Library Program Kit: Freedom Cards: Codes of the Underground Railroad

Calendar/Event Details

Folklore says that quilts with certain patterns were used as signs to help slaves navigate the Underground Railroad. Tumbling Blocks may signify that it’s time to gather your belongings, while the Log Cabin would mean that you’ve reached a safe house.

Help us celebrate Black History Month and the folklore of the Freedom Quilts.

This program kit contains:

  • Booklist of sources
  • Two blank cards & envelopes
  • Diagram & explanation of quilt patterns
  • Colored pre-cut paper for pattern
  • Small glue stick

Program Kit is available at Eastside Community Center, Moore Branch, Mottet Branch and South Tacoma Branch from Wednesday, February 2nd while supplies last.

Be sure to check individual branch locations and hours HERE.
