Puma Catwalk in Sequim

Calendar/Event Details

Join top cougar scientist Dr. Mark Elbroch of Panthera, local members of the Olympic Cougar Project and human movement biomechanist Katy Bowman, M.S. on Saturday, November 6th, 2021, to learn about our local big cats and why both humans and big cats need ample natural areas for their well-being. This free, family friendly, outdoor event will be open for walkers to drop in between noon and 3:00 PM at Robin Hill County Park, 323 Pinell Road, Sequim, WA 98382 (parking in the Pinell Rd. lot). The “Puma Catwalk” is a two-mile walk where movers follow signs that include movement and tracker challenges, fun facts and photographs of our big cat neighbors in the Olympic Peninsula. It will be held rain or shine. Tickets are free but registration is required. More information is available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/puma-catwalk-in-sequim-wa-tickets-180234063937

Katy Bowman will have copies of her newest book, Grow Wild: The Whole Child, Whole Family, Nature-Rich Guide to Moving More available for purchase and signing. Dr. Elbroch will have copies of his field guides and newest book, The Cougar Conundrum: Sharing the World with a Successful Predator also on hand for purchase and signing.

Panthera is the only organization in the world that is devoted exclusively to the conservation of the world’s 40 wild cat species and their ecosystems. Catwalk’s aim is to activate fitness and learning, and in doing so create a community that is not only informed, but also invested, and whose engagement in the support of cat conservation becomes ongoing. The Sequim “Puma Catwalk” is a live and local community version of their international virtual Catwalk happening the same day.

Dr. Mark Elbroch is an ecologist, author, and storyteller, with dual interests in animal tracking and mountain lions. By profession, Elbroch is a scientist for Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organization, studying mountain lion ecology. He is also an animal tracker working to preserve ancient skills and elevate their applications in a modern world. More about him can be found at www.markelbroch.com.

Katy Bowman, M.S. is the author of many books about importance of movement, not only for our own bodies but for our communities and environment. Her newest book, Grow Wild: The Whole-Child, Whole-Family, Nature-Rich Guide to Moving More, is a ‘field guide’ to getting kids and families moving more in nature. More about Katy can be found at https://www.nutritiousmovement.com.

Note: COVID: This event is entirely outside with well-spaced signs to help keep folks naturally distanced. Bring a mask to wear when keeping 6' from those outside your party is not possible. It’s likely some will want to spend more time at each sign and some will want to move along faster; you are encouraged to communicate with each other about passing by and how long you’ll be looking at a sign—there’s plenty of space for everyone to adjust their positioning so parties can keep six feet apart!
