Join us Sunday afternoon as the Washington Wind Symphony performs "Tangents," our third concert of the season. To celebrate "Tangents," Conductor Dr. Ed Powell has woven an intricate program to entertain you from every angle. Here’s a sample of what’s in store: "Vesuvius"—Yes, that’s the famous volcano that destroyed Pompeii. Explosive. Fiery. Exotic. Just a few of the emotions composer Frank Ticheli aims to arouse in you during this epic journey. "Chester"—One of William Schuman’s most famous works, this classic masterpiece is based on tunes sung around the campfire by the Continental Army during the American Revolution. "Chester Leaps In"—Described as a "Chester remix" by composer Stephan Bryant, this playful tribute to the original twists and turns its way into a surprisingly delightful intersection of modern synchronizations that are sure to stimulate your senses. "Cathedrals"—featuring two brass choirs on stage, "Cathedrals" intertwines rich harmonies and textures in the style of Gabrieli. Composer Kathryn Salfelder employed her knowledge of aural symmetry and ratios to produce a dynamic ebb and flow of musical reverence. "O Magnum Mysterioso"—If you survive the volcano, let the band soothe your ears with the ultimate in modern masterpieces. Praised by conductors and listeners alike since its debut in 1994, composer Morton Lauridsen describes his work best: "…a quiet song of profound inner joy." "Lads of Wamphray" by Percy Grainger "Sketches on a Tudor Psalm" by Fisher Tull Whew! No need to review your trigonometry and we promise there will be no math.
