New in 2020 the city of Lakewood is expanding its recognition of the works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to not only celebrate him and his message at a public gathering, but also to extend that celebration into the month of February in honor of Black History Month.

The city will once again hold a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration where Clover Park School District students will showcase their talents and we hear from a key leaders in our community.

The public is invited Saturday, Feb. 1 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Harrison Preparatory School, 9103 Lakewood Drive SW.

Saturday’s program includes remarks from Clover Park School District Superintendent Ron Banner and U.S. Congressman Denny Heck.

There will be performances by Clover Parks School District choirs, as well as the YMCA dancers and student read poetry.

Keynote speaker Shalom Aburu will share her story of coming to the United States from Uganda to attend Pierce College and the challenges she faced as she transitioned into her new surroundings.

Today Aburu is the founder of Aburu Fashion House, one of the directors of Morkiswa Community Skilling Organization, a nonprofit in Uganda that provides education for youth, and in 2018 she was crowned Miss Uganda North America and later crowned Miss Africa Washington State.

Lakewood is working with its community partners to see additional Black History Month activities planned to engage its residents and will list details around those events here once they are finalized.
