Unbuilding Place with JP Kemmick
Did you know that Belltown was once tall grasslands? Or that North Seattle Community College was a cranberry bog? Or that a village, dzee-dzee-LAH-letch, where Chief Seattle once lived, was located on what is now the King Street Station? Students will work to creatively “unbuild” our built landscape in order to learn about what Seattle looked like before white settlers colonized, reshaped and industrialized it. This might take the form of lyric poetry, dystopian fiction or a creative non-fiction essay. In doing so, students will learn about the importance of vivid setting description and hone their place-based writing by examining the city they call home.
