Linda Allen will present a musical tribute to the 100th anniversary of suffrage for women. The program will feature songs, stories and images. It begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26 in the Everett Public Library auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Ave. in Everett. The event is free and open to the public.
When the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1920, women were granted the right to vote in elections. The fight for women’s suffrage was both protracted and bitter. Women fought for the right to participate in public affairs. Suffragists saw the freedom to vote as a crucial step to full equality with men. Their highly visible public campaign for suffrage led to violence and arrests. Linda Allen introduces some of the women whose stories made the difference in the 40-year-long suffrage struggle.
