Green vs. Screen: Eco-words dropped from kids' dictionary

Published on: December 30, 2013

They've ferreted out "ferret," they've pruned out "prune," but they've imported "export" and downloaded "database;" it's the latest sign of our techno-times, and it isn't sitting well with some parents.

The colorful, popular Oxford Junior Dictionary has been quietly removing many so-called green words in favor of common technology- and business-related terms.

The controversial practice came to light after an Irish mum, Lisa Saunders, tried to help her son look up "moss" and "fern" in the dictionary. The words weren't there.

Oxford University Press sez there's a reason: To stay current and relevant, new words have to be added. Which means words have to be taken out ... so that dictionary doesn't get too big for little hands. Fair 'nuff.
