More than just books, children’s literature offers a way to teach children about differences in their world. Through children’s literature, both families and educators can create an empathetic climate that nurtures the development of every child’s fullest potential by actively addressing issues of diversity and equity in the world.
At this workshop, participants will explore how to use children’s literature and read alouds to provoke and facilitate conversations on potentially challenging topics with young children.
With each presenter sharing advice on their own area of expertise, participants will have the opportunity for facilitated conversations to examine practical strategies for their own settings and how children’s literature can provide effective ways to engage and teach children about race, abilities/disabilities and religion in developmentally appropriate ways.
