Raising Critical Thinkers: Media Literacy for the Digital Age

ParentEd Talks Replay

Why is this an essential hour of a busy parent’s life?

Today’s parent is facing an onslaught of information coming at their children. They want to know how to help kids sift through the misinformation, the propaganda, advertisements, and facts, figures and good data.

Each parent is essential in guiding children to have a better understanding of how they form their ideas and opinions — and how others do as well!

What key information, insights, tools or resources will parents learn during the talk?

They will learn what it is to critically think, how to encourage and foster deeper thinking from their children, and how to navigate a child’s viewpoint as it shifts in the teen years (often in an unanticipated direction away from the parent’s worldview). I’ll share some questions to ask and practices to try.

Resources from Julie Bogart

Tech-savvy kids today are constantly awash in an onslaught of unfiltered information. How can parents help them at every stage of development to cultivate an ability to safely explore the world around them with an understanding of how their loyalties and biases affect how they assimilate information and form their beliefs?

In this free Dec. 6 ParentEd Talks event, Julie Bogart, author of “The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life,” will draw on her more than 20 years of curriculum development experience to share strategies for parents to coach critical digital literacy skills in their kids.
