More winter fun for Seattle-area families:

Climb, slide, swing and play

Pounce on a sun break or bring a towel to dry the slide: You know what to do. A new-to-you playground is free and sure to entertain — and hopefully tire out — your energetic crew.
- Head to Pier 58 on the Seattle Waterfront and explore its new playground, complete with a jellyfish climber and tube slide.
- Check out Shoreline’s first universal design playground and sensory garden.
- Brighten up playtime with a visit to Cheryl Chow Park. Kids will love the neon play structures, and parents can sneak in a workout on the exercise equipment.
- Buzz on over to Bellevue to explore the bee-themed structures of Hidden Valley Park’s playground.
- See if your neighborhood park was one of 10 Seattle-area playgrounds that got a major makeover last year.
- No matter the weather, you can head out to these rainy day parks and playgrounds for a playful romp.
- We’re still in the thick of the Big Dark season with the sun setting around 5:30 p.m., but that doesn’t mean the fun has to end at sunset. Check out these amazing lighted playgrounds that keep you playing all night (or at least until bedtime).
Next up: Go to the snow
Go to the snow

Some families are spending their weekends skiing this winter. But there are plenty of ways to play in the snow — while we have the chance. If you want to go frolic in the white stuff, plan carefully.
- Sledding and tubing spots around the region deliver a screaming good time.
- There is a popular Sno-Park at the Annette Lake trailhead. It’s not a sledding spot, but you can go for snowball fights or building snowpeople.
- Snowshoeing is a fab family sport. It’s fun, it’s easy and it costs a lot less than downhill skiing. If you’d like to try out snowshoeing with a guide, sign up for a free ranger-guided snowshoe walk. (Bring your snowshoes; or rent from a gear shop like REI if needed.)
- If you’d rather glide on ice than stomp through snow, there are some ice-skating rinks open year-round (one even has ice bumper cars!). You can also try your hand at a few other Winter Olympic sports in the Seattle area.
Next up: Explore indoors
Escape the rain

No surprise here, rain showers are in the forecast. Thankfully, many museums and attractions offer indoor entertainment and an escape from winter drizzle.
- Let the kids dig into the state’s largest indoor sandbox, where they’ll find toy excavators, shovels, beach toys and more.
- Parents can kick back and relax in the luxe lounge area of Nick’s Magnificent while kids can take their imaginative play to the next level.
- Step inside Bubble Planet, an otherworldly experience with 10 immersive rooms — and the world’s largest bubble bath ball pit.
- Visit Laro Tayo, a charming social hub in Kent where kids can climb, play and explore while parents recharge.
- Pair playtime for the kids with a caffeine boost for parents at Nixi City, a bright and airy play café.
- Be the next contestant on Great Big Game Show, then keep the fun going with The Escape Game next door.
- Want to get out of the house and learn something new? These great children’s museums will do the trick.
- Kids can get the wiggles out at these great indoor playgrounds around town.

- Get an early taste of summertime adventures while splashing at these great indoor swimming pools.
Next up: Enjoy a winter wander
Wander through nature

Some kids are known to recoil when they hear the word “hike.” So, just call it a “winter wander” or an “adventure in the green.” Pack the trail mix or any enticing snack, and you’re on your way.
- Explore local trails and then duck inside one of these fantastic nature centers for kid-friendly activities (and a break from the rain).
- These kid-friendly nature walks are right in town, so you can skip the long car ride.
- Take a scenic winter hike and enjoy the fresh air, quiet forest and babbling brooks.
- If hikes aren’t your family’s thing but you still want to explore local wonders, visit one of these enchanting trolls. You could also explore a local tree house, fort or hobbit home.

- Pack your wheels and head out to explore six great stroller-friendly paths around Seattle and the Eastside, or favorite stroller-ready paths around the South Sound.
