Spring break is nearly upon us! Many families are traveling during this school break, lots more of us are sticking around town. And we need a change of scenery, too — or a change of routine, at least! There’s one thing we all need to do, kids and parents alike: Ditch the devices and go play.
We’ve rounded up some super fun ideas for your family playtime this spring break, including some indoor options, as the forecast is predicting some drizzly moments. No matter, we’ll be going outside anyhow — and also doing our sun dance, of course.
Frolic among the flowers

Gorgeous blooms deliver the promise of spring and lift the spirits at the same time — always in order this season.
- Spring break is the ideal time to visit the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, in full swing for 2026. Read our guide to plan your family visit.
- Cherry blossoms are in their full glory in early April; take the kids to wander among the pale pink snowstorm of petals.
- Another beautiful garden that can serve to lower your stress for an hour is the Bellevue Botanical Garden. Wander the paths among the different garden sections — and don’t miss the Ravine Experience.
Hike the trails

We don’t call it forest bathing, we just call it messing around in the woods! Pack the good snacks and you’re on your way.
- Learn something, inside and out, when you visit a nature center with nearby trails.
- Explore 27 acres of trails, a conservatory and an upgraded playground at Tacoma’s fantastic Wright Park.
- Spend time outside (and close to home) on these trails that are perfect for spring.
- Catch views of cascading waterfalls on these adventurous hikes.
- Check a popular hike off your bucket list, or opt for a less-crowded alternative nearby.

Meet friendly animals

Got critter lovers in your crew? Visit some sweet animals to make your spring break memories.
- Feed a capybara, spot free-roaming bison or even dive with sharks with these unusual animal encounters.
- Cuddle up with baby animals and learn about daily farm life at these charming local spots.
- Meet the softest, friendliest alpacas in town — many of these farms will let you interact with and feed the animals.
- Jam with jellyfish, gently touch an anemone and get to know the wildlife at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
- The Washington State Spring Fair is on for 2026. It takes place over two weekends: Thursday–Sunday, April 10–12 and Thursday–Sunday, April 17–19.
- The critters at Old McDebbie’s Farm range from goats to kangaroos. You can also reel in a trout from the farm’s private fishing pond. This spot is open Friday–Sunday during the spring.
Get out of the rain

Head to these indoor family destinations on a day you need to let your rain jackets dry.
- Visit a museum, try your hand at splatter painting or visit an inclusive playground. All these and more top the list of our favorite sensory-friendly outings.
- Let the kids dig to their hearts’ content in the state’s largest indoor sandbox.
- Pair indoor playtime for them with a little luxury for you: Nick’s Magnificent offers open and imaginative play spaces, alongside a café menu with gourmet food and bubbly drinks.
- Speaking of bubbles, don’t miss out on a giant ball pit and more immersive experiences at Bubble Planet!
- Tackle your email inbox or get a little work done while the kids play at Laro Tayo, an indoor playground with community at its heart. If you’re farther north, head to Nixi City for a playdate (and a coffee).
- Be the next contestant on Great Big Game Show, or try your hardest to break free from The Escape Game next door. (Or take a tip from our editor’s playbook and do both on the same day!)
- Let the kids bounce off the walls, paint a piece of art or putt-putt their heart out at these indoor activity spots, whether you are looking for a place in Seattle and the Eastside, or South Sound.
- Want to get out of the house and learn something new? These great children’s museums will do the trick.
- Keep the educational fun going by checking out a few new books from a destination library.
- The weather might be getting warmer, but we’re just a bit early for outdoor swimming season. Get an early taste of summertime adventures while splashing at these great indoor swimming pools.

Take a mini escape

Explore a new or different corner of our region on a day trip. You get a refreshing change of scenery with minimal hassles and almost no packing.
- Visit a storybook coastal town that has it all: beaches, hiking paths and tourist-friendly shops.
- Start a free day with a delicious brunch and then find your way to a nearby spot for playtime with these kid-tested itineraries. You might even make it home in time for a nap.
- Head north to Skagit Valley, where you might just spot Sasquatch (and have the best cinnamon roll of your life).
- Escape to Vashon Island for mountain views and delicious bites.

- Make the trek to a kids’ paradise, otherwise known as the Great Wolf Lodge, for a day or weekend of water-filled fun. Don’t want to commit to a full weekend? Consider getting a day pass.
Wheel around

Dust off your bikes, scooters or other wheels, pack up the helmets, and roll out for a spring adventure!

- For a super-fun roller coaster ride on two wheels — that even little kids will love — check out a nearby pump track.
- If your wheels happen to be on a stroller, try these paved trails in Seattle and the Eastside that afford your crew a spacious, less-bumpy stroll. There are several great trails in South Sound, too.
- Turn back the clock at with a nostalgic spin around a roller-skating rink.
Book a quick overnight escape

Even if you haven’t made a plan yet, you can probably find a spot for a quick overnight escape, if you go during the week.
- The forecast looks decidedly April-showery. But if you want to go camping, not to worry. See if you can snag a nearby campsite. Even if it looks to be warm and sunny during the day, just remember to pack extra-warm gear for nighttime.

- Change your camping plans from rustic to luxe by booking a stay in a yurt or “glampsite.”
