10. Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad

The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad is back! Take a scenic excursion from Elbe to Mineral, onboard a vintage train led by a 100-year-old-steam engine. There are two open-air train cars, historic coaches and a baggage car that has been transformed into a concession stand and gift shop. You can stretch your legs on the ride and check out each of the cars. And, in the winter, you won’t want to miss the Polar Express train.

Another option: RailCycle. While this isn’t really a train ride, this pedal-powered railbike excursion has the makings of a super fun family outing — right on the train tracks! RailCycles are perfect for rolling along the tracks and taking in the view. You’ll depart from Eatonville, Washington on the road to Mount Rainier National Park, cycle for 1.5 miles (3 miles round trip) to a scenic turnaround spot where you can relax for a bit before the return trip. The trips are led by a guide, and take a total of two hours.

Getting there: Train excursions leave from the Elbe Depot, located at 54124 Mountain Hwy. E. in Elbe. RailCycle rides leave from 13203 Alder Mashel Connection Rd. E. in Eatonville. It’s about an hour and a half drive from Seattle, or an hour from Tacoma.

Rides and cost: Tickets for train excursions and RailCycle rides can be purchased online. Train excursions cost $34 for adults, $15 for kids ages 6–17, and free for 5 and younger. RailCycle tickets cost $35 per person.

Things to do nearby: While the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad does not go into Mount Rainier National Park, it’s not far from it. Make a plan to visit the park and enjoy more time outside (don’t forget reservations are required to enter Mount Rainier National Park).
