Green Tacoma Day Tree Climbs

Calendar/Event Details

47766

Tell your kids to go climb a tree! At Wright Park kids can climb a 55-year-old giant sequoia or help with a tree planting project. Details below.

Join us from 10 am-1 pm for Restoration, Education, and Family Fun!

(Note: this event was previously planned for Oct. 8, it has been rescheduled to Oct. 1)

When it comes to kids and climbing trees, a backyard apple is one thing. A giant sequoia in the middle of Tacoma’s oldest arboretum is another.

That second option will be the premier draw in Wright Park during annual Green Tacoma Day festivities Saturday, Oct. 1.

Children 5 and older, with parental permission, will be helmeted, harnessed and hoisted into the upper reaches of the park’s outstanding 55-year-old giant sequoia. Then, while tethered to a professional arborist, they’ll have the opportunity to move through the tree, one branch at a time. This year, the event will be supported by Zeb Haney (a certified arborist and owner/operator of a local tree services company) who will volunteer his time and equipment to assist hoisting children into the tree.

Also in Wright Park, Metro Parks urban forester Mark McDonough will give children a chance to plant a few trees while he provides pointers on proper planting techniques.
