Celebrate Freedom Weekend with three days of fun for the whole family. The Northwest African American Museum invites you to 2023 Freedom Weekend! Saturday, August 26 to Monday, August 28 the museum will host events and activations to commemorate the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

NAAM’s Freedom Weekend celebrates the 60th anniversary of the historic civil rights March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This year, we are partnering with the MLK Commemoration Committee to honor the historic 1963 March on Washington with three days of free events. The theme is Dream Unfinished: Not a Commemoration, but a Continuation.

Sat., August 26 | NAAM | 10:00AM - 5:00PM

Day 1 of Freedom Weekend begins with Youth Day. Join us at NAAM for a community youth day where we are hosting a community and resource fair for young people (12-25). Attendees will hear from future community leaders, learn more about a variety of career options, paid apprenticeship programs, and so much more. There will also be storytelling, a talent shows, and more fun things for the family to enjoy. 

Sun., August 27 | NAAM | 11:00AM - 5:00PM

Day 2 of Freedom Weekend, enjoy the NAAM Film Festival and participate in the Freedom March. Join us for film screenings throughout the day about the March on Washington and the history of freedom fighters in America. Some of the films featured include "The March" directed by John Akomfrah and "John Lewis: Good Trouble" directed by Dawn Porter. Later in the day at 3PM a March & Rally will start at the museum and end at MLK Jr. Memorial Park.

Day 3 of the Freedom Weekend Celebration culminates with Community Panel Discussion in Legacy Hall.The MLK Commemoration Committee is hosting a panel discussion that will reflect on the progress we have made, inspire change, and discuss the importance of empowering our future. The panel will be composed of community leaders, including labor and elected officials. Q&A will be open to audiences following the panel. A complementary variety of ethnic dishes will be served.
