Secular Humanistic Lag B'Omer Bonfire & Picnic

Calendar/Event Details

Come join the Secular Jewish Circle of Puget Sound for a Secular Humanistic Lag B'Omer bonfire & picnic! If you haven't heard of Lag B'Omer, you're not alone! It's a very minor Jewish holiday, but we love having it in our holiday rotation because it's just so much fun!

If you're a "casual" or culturally-Jewish family, or even just an atheistic or agnostic family, looking to expose your kids to more authentic Jewish culture, this is a fun, low-stakes way to do it. No three-hour reading rituals like Passover, no watered-down over-Christmas-ified situations like Hanukkah, where you're not even sure you're getting the real experience anymore...just a low-key day out in nature, learning about another culture over snacks, where your kids can safely be as loud and active as they like.

So what does Lag B'Omer celebrate, you may ask? Well it marks the 33rd day following the liberation of the Jews from slavery in ancient Egypt (aka Passover). Those first 32 days are seen as a mourning period, but the 33rd day specifically is a day of joy and renewal, where Jews customarily will schedule things like haircuts and weddings. Where does nature and the bonfire come into the equation? Attend to find out!

All ages & families welcome! Free, but a Discover Pass is required to enter the park by car.
