2020 RGI "Run to Rwanda" Virtual Fun Run
Sophie Sharp, Clyde Hill resident, 11th grade student at The Overlake School, Redmond and alumn of St. Thomas School, Medina WA is once again organizing a fun run to raise awareness and funding to benefit Rwanda Girls Initiative (RGI). The last 2 fun runs have been hugely successful community events and raised over $55,000 for RGI.
As you know the coronavirus pandemic has impacted many events and plans for this summer. As a result of this, we have decided to change the run to a virtual format!
Participants will be given 2 weeks, from the 6th until the 20th of September, 2020, to run or walk as many miles as they can and they will be able to submit their miles on our website! Our goal is to collectively run 8,862 miles from Washington State to Rwanda, hence "Run to Rwanda". The last mile will be run by the Gashora Girls Academy Students into their beautiful school in Rwanda which we'll share with all participants via video.
Participants will sign up online and will have the option to receive a race t-shirt in the mail (US only and will be asked to pay additional shipping fee) or they can pick the t-shirt up at St. Thomas School on Saturday, September 5th from 8 am till 12 pm. The first 500 people (until sizes run out) will receive a t-shirt!
On the first day of the two-week time period participants will receive an email to remind them of the start of the race and it will include the link of where to submit their miles. Participants can update their miles as often as they like. Runners can walk, run, or jog but biking is not allowed. Even if you run or walk 1 mile it still helps us towards our goal so we encourage everyone to submit all their miles!
What makes the race so unique this year is that we can have participation from around the world! Even if you’re on vacation or live in another country, you can still participate!
Registration is $35 ($40 after Aug 23) and there is now an option for team fund raising! Get your families and friends together to see how much money you can raise for this important cause. You will be able to create your own fundraising page where you can track your progress! You can also do pledge fundraising using the template included in this website!
