February 2025 Focus: Alma Woodsey Thomas

Alma Woodsey Thomas was an extraordinary African-American artist and educator whose vibrant abstract paintings have left a lasting legacy. After retiring from a 35-year teaching career in Washington, D.C., she rose to prominence, becoming the first graduate of Howard University's art department and a trailblazer in the art world.

Her work, inspired by the beauty of nature, celebrated creativity beyond race and gender. Thomas described her signature style as "Alma's Stripes," a technique characterized by colorful, overlapping rectangles—a style showcased in her iconic piece "Resurrection," part of the White House Collection.

Join us in February to learn about Alma Thomas and create your own colorful masterpiece in the style of "Alma’s Stripes."
