Editor's note: Obviously, we can't guarantee that an event billed as peaceful or family-friendly remains that way; please use your own best judgment for the safety of your family and be sure to practice social distancing.
This is a group for those of us living in Fremont, Wallingford and surrounding neighborhoods who want to come together and stand up against police brutality, racism and racist policies, and in support of Black and Brown people who are in our local community and beyond.
Some guidelines:
-Please wear a mask and practice social distancing as much as possible. Bring hand sanitizer with you if you have it!
-We’ll be spreading out across all 4 corners of the intersection, for maximum visibility (and social distancing).
-We encourage those who are comfortable leading chants to lead the way at any time! If multiple people wish to speak or lead call & response, please prioritize Black voices.
-The focus of these protests is to support the BLM movement and protest police violence specifically, so please bear that in mind when making signs.
-Feel free to distribute voting information and help inform others about our local representatives, but do NOT collect voter information. If police get a hold of that information they can save it for harassment and tracking.
-If antagonists come by attempting to provoke protesters, do not engage and be mindful of the safety of the larger group. If someone appears to be potentially violent, get some space and immediately alert others.
If police approach:
-Take out phones and start taking video as soon as possible
-Write down any visible badge numbers, patrol car numbers and names
-Stay calm. Make sure to keep your hands visible. Don’t argue, resist, or obstruct the police, even if you believe they are violating your rights. Point out that you are not disrupting anyone else’s activity and that the First Amendment protects your actions.
-Ask if you are free to leave. If the officer says yes, calmly walk away.
-Remember that you have a RIGHT to protest, especially on a public location like a sidewalk that is not obstructing any traffic.
-If you are under arrest, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don’t say anything or sign anything without a lawyer.
For any concerns, please find one of the organizers - we're happy to help with first aid, de-escalation, safety, resources, and anything else.
