As our schools become more diverse, cultural competence will be an increasingly important skill for teachers’ efficacy and children's success. By cultivating the individual genius of each child, and meeting children where they are, we can invigorate the curriculum and provide all children with high-quality early education experiences. This workshop will address cultural influences on children's learning styles, and provide a practical approach to helping Black children thrive in the classroom. Challenge yourself and your community to develop critical skills, gain specific knowledge, and enhance essential dispositions that support children and families in communities of color.
Join us on May 8th at Seattle City Hall, as we take an in-depth look at the cultural relevancy and teaching methodologies best suited for the success of Black children in public and private school settings. Facilitated by Dr. Debra Sullivan, the author of the book Cultivating the Genius of Black Children and President of the Seattle Black Child Development Institute, this session will provide practical advice, effective strategies, and inspiring stories backed by years of study. Educators, family members, policy makers, City of Seattle employees, and students will all benefit from participating in this conversation.
“As Chair of Seattle’s Civil Rights Committee, I have a responsibility to not only shed light on the achievement gap among children of color, but to support efforts to close it. Let’s use this conversation at City Hall, and our shared commitment to racial equity for all, to work towards transforming our early childhood and school age education programs so they can better address the needs of children of color at any age.” - Seattle City Councilmember Lisa Herbold, District 1.
Participants at this workshop will explore ways we can implement appropriate learning environments for Black children and empower teachers and families in creating environments that support the learning needs of Black children. This session will be filled with effective strategies and best practices to help adults expand their "toolbox" to support and cultivate the genius of Black children.
