Seattle-based Windstar Cruises’ cruise ship Star Legend will become the largest ship to ever traverse the Ballard Locks and the Ship Canal into Lake Union on June 27 in a one-time-only event visible via shore for all Seattleites and open to media to experience on board.
The 212-passenger all-suite Star Legend is sailing in Alaska starting in May (through August), which marks a return to Alaska for the company after a 20-year hiatus from the region. The Legend will complete a 14-day journey from Seward (Anchorage) to Vancouver before making the additional trip down to Seattle on June 26.
The ship will dock at the Bell Street Pier 66 Cruise Terminal at 7 a.m. on June 27 and will be available for tours and images until 11 a.m. Media who wish to come aboard for the journey from the pier to the locks should plan to arrive at 11 a.m. as Star Legend will depart the pier at noon, with scenic sailing around Elliott Bay before arriving at the Ballard Locks at 1 p.m.
From 2-3 p.m. it will transit through the locks, passing Ballard Bridge, Ship Canal, and Fremont Bridge before its Lake Union anchorage.
