Japan Week Festival Day at Bellevue College

The opening Saturday of Japan Week is a Japanese festival “Matsuri,” open to the public and dedicated to celebrating Japan’s rich culture and history. Join us for a day of games, music, workshops, and activities: Play with traditional Japanese toys in the “kids” corner, shop at our Flea Market full of authentic Japanese gifts, learn the Code of Samurai “Bushido,” show off your karaoke talents, and participate in the cosplay contest. Free entry, free parking.

Program Highlights

Kendama Contest.  Hosted by the Kendama World Champion (and his twin brother) who are both Bellevue College alumni. We plan to have a competition for Beginning level and Intermediate level players. Winners in each group will receive a prize.

Japanese movie.  This year’s movie is ビリギャル (“Flying Colors”) based on a true story about a failing high school student who was accepted into Keio University after meeting a teacher who believed in her abilities.

Planetarium Storytime.  The audience views the Harvest Moon and Milky Way while listening to かぐや姫 (Moon Princess) and 七夕の話 (The Story of Star Festival)

Japan Quiz Show.  Participants will use their smartphones to answer questions related to Japan. There will be a prize for the winner.

Cosplay Costume Contest by SakuraCon. There will be a prize for the winner.

Dango Workshop.  Learn how to make delicious Dango. International students from Japan will be conducting this cooking workshop.

Martial Arts Demonstrations by various martial arts schools.
